Leadership 110

Wednesday Evening Bible Study

August 19, 1998

Homework assignments – Did you have your Quiet Times? Did you pray for your ministry? Did you complete this week’s assignment in Spiritual Leadership?

Large Group Discussion

Share a lesson you learned from your Quiet Times this week. (Have two or three share)

(mine) - (Job 21:34 KJV) How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?

Job's "friends" thought all bad things were due to sin, an error in theology. Their "comfort" wasn’t based in truth, and brought no comfort at all. Stay based in the truth!

What are questions you have about Leadership that still need to be addressed in our class?

Who is lacking a regular accountability relationship? (talk with me afterwards)

Spiritual Leadership

The Art of Delegation (ch.18)

Focus Study -

Exo 18:13-24 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. {14} And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? {15} And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God: {16} When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws. {17} And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. {18} Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. {19} Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: {20} And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. {21} Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: {22} And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. {23} If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. {24} So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

Why do we need to delegate?

We will wear ourselves out, as well as do a disservice to those we minister to (Ex.18:18).

It helps to train future leaders by giving them experience.

Who needs to learn how to delegate?

We all do.

What are the keys to successful delegation?

Picking the right people – ableness, fearing God, truthful, not easily bribed (Ex.18:21)

Giving them clear responsibilities – Moses was to teach them, they were assigned specific responsibilities (thousands, hundreds, etc.) (Ex.18:20-21)

Other points from the book: Giving them authority to carry out the job, write out their responsibilities clearly, be ready to help but reluctant to intervene.

"The Future of Calvary Chapel"

What’s one of the dangers that Calvary Chapel faces?

The danger of institutionalization, staying comfortable with where we’re at and not staying flexible to adapt to the current generation.

Don’t get comfortable, be on the cutting edge.

What are reasons for being in the ministry (good and bad)?

Good: Being constrained by the love of Christ

Bad: The love of being in front of others, recognition, feeling important.

What does it mean to be successful in ministry?

It is not: Large numbers, big offerings, buildings

It is: Faithfulness to what God calls you to, prayer, preparation, being ready for the attacks that will come.

How does the enemy attack those in ministry?

Sexual temptation; financial temptations; glory temptations.

It’s God that does the work, not us. Don’t take His glory.

What’s one of the most important things you can do to prepare yourself for ministry?

Spending more time in prayer. It’s God’s work, learn to let Him do it!

Who are they?

Wayne Taylor (Seattle), Richie Furay (Colorado), Mike McIntosh (San Diego), Greg Laurie (Harvest), Raul Ries (Golden Springs)

Jon Courson (Oregon), Skip Heitzig (Albuquerque), Joe Fosch (Philadelphia), Bob Coy (Ft. Lauderdale), Damian Kyle (Modesto), Tom Stipe (Denver), Don McClure (San Jose), Bil Galatin (New York)

All are just some of the pastors who you may not always hear about, but all have been used mightily by God across the country.

Calvary Chapel is NOT a Denomination

Each church is independent. There is no central office that holds some kind of authority over the churches other than the use of the name "Calvary Chapel". There is an "approval process" for affiliation, but it’s simply for the purpose if insuring "like-mindedness". The approval process makes you a part of the "fellowship", and allows you to use the name "Calvary Chapel". Technically, the "Calvary Chapel Outreach Fellowship" office is only for the purpose of putting on Pastors’ Conferences. They will give counsel and advice, but that’s all. There are no financial connections between the churches.
