Romans 13:11-14

Introduction

Paul has moved through his doctrinal section in Romans and now has moved on to the practical side of things.  He’s been telling the church in Rome how they are a "body", and like a body, they are all separate parts that belong and function together. He’s talked to them about their obligations to each other like loving without hypocrisy, meeting needs, blessing, and not taking vengeance. He’s talked about our need to submit to those in authority and the debt of love we owe others. Now he moves on with getting ready for Jesus’ return.

:11-14 Getting ready for Jesus’ return

:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

the timekairos – a measure of time, a fixed and definite time, the time when things are brought to crisis, the decisive epoch waited for

Paul is not referring to chronological time (chronos) but to kairos, time as an era, epoch, or age (MacArthur).

Do you know what "age" we’re in?

(Mat 16:1-3 KJV) The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. {2} He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. {3} And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

The Pharisees knew a lot about how to predict the weather, but they were ignorant to the fact of the times they were in . The Messiah was standing right in front of them.

high time – literally, "now is the hour" to wake up.

sleep – The Encyclopedia Britannica defines sleep as "a state of inactivity, with a loss of consciousness and a decrease in responsiveness to events taking place."

Are you asleep or awake?

salvationsoteria – deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation; future salvation, the sum of benefits and blessings which the Christians, redeemed from all earthly ills, will enjoy after the visible return of Christ from heaven in the consummated and eternal kingdom of God.

Paul is saying that Jesus’ return is now closer than it’s ever been before. And for us, it’s even closer.

Paul uses the picture of somebody sleeping through the night. It’s about time to wake up.

Lesson

Jesus wants us to be expectantly waiting for His return.

It’s not hard to get cynical about Jesus’ return and say something like, "Well Paul thought Jesus was about to come back, and boy was he wrong! Why should I be concerned?"

(Mat 24:37-51 KJV) But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. {38} For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, {39} And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

It will be like the days of Noah. What were the days of Noah like? They were like any other ordinary days. In a sense there was nothing unusual about them. If it were so totally obvious that the flood was coming, why would people be doing things like "eating, drinking, marrying, etc."?

{40} Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. {41} Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. {42} Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Some people feel these verses could be talking about the people being taken away in judgment as when Jesus returns after the end of the Tribulation period. Others feel this could be talking about the Rapture, when Jesus will quickly snatch His church away.

{43} But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. {44} Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Be ready. You never know when it could happen.

{45} Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? {46} Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. {47} Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. {48} But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; {49} And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; {50} The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, {51} And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Which servant thinks that the Lord is delaying His coming? The evil servant.

Which servant is ready for his Master’s return? The faithful and wise servant.

Jesus is coming for us. It may be that we could suddenly die, and then we will find ourselves in His presence. It may be that the time of His return will finally come. Be ready.

Signs of the times

We know that the Jews will rebuilt their temple in Jerusalem before Jesus’ return.

This was in the news this week (9-28-99)

GOLD MENORAH READY FOR THE THIRD TEMPLE

The Temple Institute has completed the construction of a Menorah, similar to the one used in the Holy Temple. Institute Head Rabbi Yisrael Ariel told (Arutz-7’s) Yosef Zalmanson that the Menorah was constructed not for profane or for personal use, but rather "for the sake of the commandment." On the other hand, the Menorah was not officially consecrated for Temple use, so as to avoid the Halakhic (Jewish-legal) prohibition of deriving benefit from Temple property. "It, or other Menorahs, will be consecrated when the Temple is rebuilt," Rabbi Ariel said. The Menorah is two meters high, and is made of 42 kilograms of pure gold.

:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

far spentprokopto – to beat forward; to go forward, advance, proceed

There’s not much night time left.

at handeggizo – to bring near, to join one thing to another; to draw or come near to, to approach

cast offapotithemi – to put off or aside or away

put onenduo –to sink into (clothing), put on, clothe one's self

The picture is like getting up in the morning and changing out of your pajamas and into your daytime clothes.

Paul gives another description to the Colossians about what we are to take off and put on:

(Col 3:8-14 NIV) But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. {9} Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices {10} and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. {11} Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. {12} Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. {13} Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. {14} And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

armor of light

MacArthur – "The imagery here pictures a soldier who has been engaged in a night orgy and drinking bout and, still clad in the garments of his sin, has fallen into a drunken sleep. But the dawn is approaching and the battle is at hand. It is time to wake up, throw off the clothes of night, and put on the battle gear."

Illustration

A bunch of recruits were having a written examination, and when one of them was asked why he wasn’t working, he replied, "Sir, I have neither paper nor pencil." "Well!" exclaimed the instructor, "what would you think of a soldier who went into battle with neither rifle nor ammunition?" The recruit thought for a moment, and then answered, "I’d think he was an officer, sir."

Unfortunately, too many Christians today think they are officers in God’s army and have no need of the Spirit’s weapons. Don’t underestimate the enemy!

What is our armor?

(Eph 6:13-18 KJV) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {14} Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth

loins girtedperizosamenoi – to wrap around, gird

truthaletheia – "the reality lying at the basis of an appearance; the manifested veritable essence of a matter"

I think it can refer to two things:

1) The Word of God

2) Honesty – being honest to ourselves

Background on the Roman Belt: The belt or girdle was six to eight inches wide, went around the waist and everything else was attached to it. It was also important in keeping the soldier's tunic from getting in the way or tripping him as he moved.

Truth can accomplish the same two functions that the belt did.

1) It can be that to which everything is attached. If your life is based in honesty to others and yourself, then things fall into place. But if you're living a lie, then your life becomes unbalanced.

2) It can keep you from tripping up. When you're in a lie, it seems you have to keep lying to cover yourself and you just keep getting deeper into a hole. But when you're wrapped in truth, you don't even have to worry about tripping.

and having on the breastplate of righteousness

righteousnessdikaiosunes – righteousness; conformity to the Divine will in purpose, thought and action.

There are two kinds of righteousness in the Scriptures, both the kind that we produce by doing good things, as well as the righteousness of Jesus that becomes ours when we trust in Him.

Background on the Roman Breastplate: It was made of bronze backed with tough pieces of hide. It protected the heart.

One of Satan's favorite directions of attack against believers is by going for the heart. He likes to attack us in the area of righteousness. He is called the accuser of the brethren (Rev. 12:10), and he likes to put us on guilt trips, pointing out how short we are falling from God's standards. But Jesus wants to protect our hearts with His righteousness. Then when Satan attacks us, we can respond, "Yes, that's right, I am a jerk and a sinner-deluxe, but I'm covered in Jesus' righteousness (which is perfect), not my own."

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace

Readiness of mind that comes from the gospel whose message is peace.

Background of the Roman Boot: The hobnail sandal. Its importance was in giving a firm footing during hand-to-hand combat. To keep the soldier from slipping.

Several things keep us from slipping.

Being ready to share the gospel, being prepared.

The peace that comes from knowing God through the gospel.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

taking upanalabontes – to take up, to raise; to take to oneself. A shield is no good if it's not held up for protection, so faith is no good unless we exercise it.

shieldthureon – a door stone; a large oblong shield, not the small round shield of the light-armed soldier.

faithpisteos – faith, belief, trust, confidence

These darts were sometimes ablaze in order to set fire to the enemies' clothing or camp or homes just as American Indians did. They used tar or pitch on the end of the arrows or darts and they would not only burn, but if they hit a crack in the armor, the pitch would drip inside, burning the soldier badly.

Background on the Roman Shield: Two feet wide by four feet long, used to ward off blows of the enemy and to hide behind when enemy archers let go a volley of arrows. It contained layers of wood and hide and sometimes bronze. When flaming darts would hit it, they would stick in it but then snuff themselves out in the hide. The Romans could kneel down on the ground and erect a wall of shields around them to block out flaming missiles as they advanced (phalanx).

My ability to trust God, to be confident in His ability, is going to be directly related to whether or not I'm going to get burned by Satan's attacks. Is God faithful? Can I trust Him?

And take the helmet of salvation,

takedexasthe – to receive, accept; of taking or accepting what is offered.

Background on Roman Helmet: Protection for the head from the fatal blow.

First I must be saved if I want to keep my head from getting smashed in. But as a believer, it's important that I don't let the enemy knock me in head by messing with my mind, making me doubt my salvation.

and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

This is the only "offensive" weapon in the list.

swordmachairan – a large knife, short sword, dagger; not a large broad sword or straight sword for thrusting

Background on Roman Sword: It was about twenty-four inches long, sharp on both edges, and pointed on the end. A trained soldier could thrust and cut from any position so as never to be caught off balance. Opposing armies used larger swords that required a certain stance with a hefty swing, so a Roman soldier could duck, catch the other guy off balance and finish him off before he knew what hit him.

I need to become proficient at using God's Word. I need to be familiar with it, and practically, not just knowing answers to Sunday School questions of Bible Trivia Games. I need to know how it affects me, and what it says about the areas that I'm weakest in. I need to put it into my heart so that it's there when I need it, and that it might become a part of me.

Look at Jesus dealing with Satan’s temptations (Mat. 4). Jesus knew just what Scriptures dealt with each temptation. Do you know what God says about the things you are tempted with?

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Though we may not see prayer as part of the list of weapons, I think it’s pretty important to include it in the list. Prayer is how we keep in touch with our Commander in Chief. It’s our communication with the generals who run the army.

:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

honestlyeuschemonos – in a seemly manner, decently, to live honestly before the Lord.

riotingkomos – a revel, carousal; a nocturnal and riotous procession of half drunken and frolicsome fellows who after supper parade through the streets with torches and music in honour of Bacchus or some other deity, and sing and play before houses of male and female friends; hence used generally of feasts and drinking parties that are protracted till late at night and indulge in revelry.

drunkennessmethe – intoxication; drunkenness

chamberingkoite – a place for laying down, resting, sleeping in; a bed, couch; the marriage bed; adultery; cohabitation. We might call this "sleeping around".

wantonnessaselgeia –unbridled lust, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence; sexual excesses, absence of restraint.

strifeeris – wrangling; persistent contention, bickering, petty disagreement, and enmity.

envyingzelos – excitement of mind, ardour, fervour of spirit; an envious and contentious rivalry, jealousy

These are all "night time" activities. These are all the types of things that we are to "cast off" (vs.12).

:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ

put ye onenduo – to sink into (clothing), put on, clothe one's self

Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

When we were saved, we were "immersed" or "baptized" into Jesus.

I think this command doesn’t mean that we are to "put on" an act, but that we are to make ourselves to look more like Jesus.

Lesson

More like Jesus.

The ultimate "armor" to put on is Jesus Himself.

Learn to think like Jesus. Learn to act like Jesus. Do the things that influence you to be more like Jesus.

Prayer, Bible Study, Worship, Fellowship, Witnessing.

Victory over sin doesn’t just come by denying the flesh. You’ve got to fill the void with something else, and it needs to be Jesus.

:14 and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

provisionpronoia – forethought, providential care; to make provision for a thing.

to fulfilpoieo – to make; to do

lustsepithumia – desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust

Lesson

Don’t provide for the flesh.

There is a sense in which much of our sins are things we have planned to do.

(Psa 36:1-4 KJV) To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD. The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. {2} For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful. {3} The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good. {4} He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

Sadly, this is often the case of each of us.

Illustration

When these extreme explorers try to climb Mount Everest, it’s very important that they have figured out how much supplies they’re going to need. They have special camps along the way to rest and be re-supplied. One of the keys to surviving Everest is having adequate provisions.

Part of victory over sin requires that we allow our sin to "survive". Don’t be planning ahead about how you are going to sin.

Acts 19:18-20 And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds. {19} Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. {20} So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

These people in Ephesus were coming to Jesus and as a result, started cleaning out their closets, getting rid of all their junk. Note that one result was that the Word of God grew and prevailed.

Be careful not to have the things close by that will tempt you. Clean out your closets. Get rid of the provisions.

Lesson

Getting ready for Jesus.

How will Jesus find you when He returns?

Will you be caught by surprise, or will you be ready for Him? We get ready by "putting on Jesus" and not feeding our flesh.
