Genesis 16-20

Introduction

The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings.

That's what the name "genesis" is all about.

It's the beginning of creation.

It's the beginning of man.

It's the beginning of civilization.

It's the beginning of sin.

It's the beginning of redemption.

It's the beginning of faith.

We've seen

the creation of the world.

the fall of mankind.

the worldwide flood of Noah.

a man of faith named Abram.

Genesis 16

:1 Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children:

Keep in mind what God has been promising to Abram.

God had promised Abram that he would have an actual, physical descendant as an heir (Gen.15:4)

God had even promised that Abram would have LOTS of descendants.

Gen 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

But we have a problem.

Abram's wife, Sarai still doesn't have any kids.

:1 she had an handmaid, an Egyptian,

Now, where did Sarai get an Egyptian handmaid?

She most likely didn't bring her from Ur of the Chaldees.

She most likely acquired her on their last trip to Egypt. (Gen.13)

That disastrous trip where Abram was trying to deceive Pharaoh into thinking that Sarai wasn't his wife, but just his sister.

It's almost as if this problem they're going to have with Hagar is a bit of a leftover problem from going to Egypt in the first place.

:1 Hagar

Hagar = "flight" (we think)

:2 go in unto my maid

According to the practice of the day, as seen in ancient writings, if Sarai's servant has a child, it could be raised as Sarai's child.

And you thought that "surrogate" parenting was a new thing!

Note:

This idea DEFINITELY didn't come from the Lord.

Lesson:

Fleshly answers bring lots of trouble.

The bottom line is that Sarai and Abram are going to try to fulfill God' promise on their own.

They're going to try and help God out a bit.

Note:

It has been suggested that because Abram and Sarai tried to help God out here, that God had to wait even longer before bringing the promised child, Isaac.

God had to wait until it was completely impossible for such an old man to have kids.

God had to wait until only HE was able to fulfill the promise.

(Heb 11:12 KJV) Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

:2 And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai

It doesn't seem that Abram put up much of a fight on this one.

:3 after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan,

Abram is 85 years old, Sarai is 75.

:4 when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

When Hagar became pregnant, she began to get an attitude against Sarai, after all, she became pregnant when Sarai was unable to.

:5 My wrong be upon thee:

Is Sarai blaming Abram for the problem that she created?

It kind of looks so.

:6 Sarai dealt hardly with her,

Sarai began to treat Hagar harshly, being mean to her.

:7 the angel of the LORD found her

This seems to be a specific person unique to the Old Testament.

He is always referred to with these specific words, not "an" angel, but "the" angel.

He is found speaking with people like:

Gen 22:11 - with Abraham

Ex. 3:2 - Moses and the burning bush

Judg 6 - Gideon

Judges 13 - with Samson's parents

2Sam 24:16 - with David

(Psa 34:7 KJV) The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

He is actually referred to as the "LORD" (Yahweh) in Ex. 3, and allows Moses to worship Him.

We believe this is a "theophany" - an appearance of Jesus Christ in a physical form, as a messenger, "The" angel of the LORD.

angel = to despatch as a deputy; a messenger; spec. of God, i.e. an angel (also a prophet, priest or teacher):--ambassador, angel, king, messenger.

This is the first appearance of "the angel of the LORD", here with Hagar as she's running from her troubles.

:7 in the way to Shur.

the way to Shur - Somewhere on the road from Beer-sheba to Egypt, Egypt being Hagar's homeland.

She was running home.

:9 Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

God doesn't want us running from our problems.

He wants us to run to Him.

And then deal with our problems.

:11 Ishmael

Ishmael = "God hears."

Many Arabs claim him as their forefather and thus Palestine as their land

:12 he will be a wild man

Lit., a wild ass.

The "angel" is possibly giving out a compliment, since the almost untameable onager (wild ass) was an admired and valuable animal.

:12 his hand will be against every man,

He is going to be a lot of trouble, especially to the nation of Israel.

:13 Thou God seest me

God does see.

We may think that at times He's lost track of us

Isa 40:27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? (AV)

He sees. He knows.

:14 Beerlahairoi;

Beer-lahai-roi means "a well of the Living One who sees me." The exact location is unknown, though possibly it was SW of Beer-sheba.

:15 Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

Apparently, Hagar obeyed the Lord, and returned to Sarai and Abram.

:16 fourscore and six years old,

86 years old when Ishmael is born.

Genesis 17

:5 Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham;

Abram = high father

Abraham = father of a multitude

:8 all the land of Canaan,

As far as God is concerned, the nation of Israel shouldn't be cut up and given to the Palestinians. It belongs to the descendants of Abraham, not Ishmael.

:10 Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

The sign of God's contract with Abraham was to be circumcision.

Circumcision is a picture of a cutting off of the fleshly nature.

Kind of ironic that God gives this to Abraham after the incident with Hagar.

I think God wants Abraham to learn to live after the spirit, not the flesh.

:12 eight days old

It's interesting that at eight days, a baby's body is able to produce the ingredient that clots their blood.

This is the best day to circumcise a baby (at least without modern medical methods), interesting!

:15 Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah

Sarai means "my princess" and Sarah means "princess." Perhaps the significance lay only in marking the occasion.

:18 O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Abraham is not totally unreceptive to the idea of another son, but to tell you the truth, he's kind of fond of this child of the flesh!

:19 Isaac:

Isaac = he laughs

God specifically says that His contract will be with Isaac, not with Ishmael.

:20 as for Ishmael, I have heard thee:

God is still going to bless Ishmael for Abraham's sake.

Genesis 18

:1 the LORD appeared

Watch to see which person the "LORD" is.

:1 in the plains of Mamre:

Near modern Hebron, a place of current controversy.

:2 three men

Note the number here, no it's not the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

But it's the Lord and two other individuals.

:4 wash your feet,

Even back in Abraham's day, feet washing was an important sign of hospitality.

:7 fetched a calf

This isn't going to be fast food.

It's going to take a while to prepare this meal.

:12 Sarah laughed within herself,

This seems to be a little different from Abraham's laugh.

Abraham seems to have laughed out of surprise and joy.

Sarah appears to laugh out of disbelief.

:14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD?

We need to ask ourselves this every once in a while.

Some people have troubles with stories like Jonah in the fish, and Shadrach & co. in the fire.

But should we be surprised, with a God like ours?

:15 Sarah denied,

A sign of her unbelief.

:17 And the LORD said,

If you're tracking the story, you'll find that two of the men have left to go down to Sodom (next chapter), while one is left talking to Abraham.

One of the men was the LORD, Yahweh, a theophany, probably our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:

(John 8:56-58 KJV) Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. {57} Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? {58} Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

:20 their sin is very grievous;

We often think of the sin of Sodom as being only homosexuality, but it was more than that.

(Ezek 16:49-50 KJV) Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. {50} And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

It starts with these kinds of sins, and goes from bad to worse.

:23 Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

This is one of the principles of God's justice, that Abraham is counting on.

It's one of the reasons why we believe that we will be raptured out of this world before God brings His judgment upon it during the tribulation.

:25 Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

The answer is "yes".

God will always judge absolutely correctly.

We will never, ever be able to say that we got a raw deal from the Lord, not once we've arrived in eternity, and seen everything from God's perspective.

:32 Peradventure ten ...

It sounds as if Abraham's pushing it a little with the Lord.

But Abraham has a reason.

He's trying to intercede for the sake of his nephew, Lot.

He knows that Lot has a wife, a couple of daughters, and some sons-in-laws.

But what he doesn't know is that that's all there is, not even with the sons-in-law.

Genesis 19

:1 there came two angels to Sodom

Here's the other two guys that left Abraham's place in Hebron.

They're now identified as simple angels.

:1 Lot sat in the gate of Sodom:

Remember the progression of Lot:

First he set his tents toward Sodom.

Then he was found living in Sodom.

Now he's sitting in the city gates.

This implies that Lot has arrived at the top of the ladder, as one of the "elders" of the city.

The city court was held at the city gates, and this means that Lot was one who helped judge the affairs of the city.

Don't think that he's necessarily being a good witness in this wicked place either.

:3 he pressed upon them greatly;

I have this feeling that Lot knows what the city is like, and what the people are capable of.

:4 all the people

This is a city-wide sin.

:5 bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Homosexuality.

Carnal knowledge.

:8 I have two daughters

I find this disgusting.

It says to me that too much of Sodom has gotten into Lot.

:10 the men put forth their hand,

The angels decide to take charge and end up rescuing Lot.

:14 But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

This shows what state Lot's witness had been.

His sons-in-law just thought he was kidding around with them.

Lesson:

Compromise ruins your witness.

We give in to the things of the world, hoping that maybe our worldly friends might accept us.

But in the end, we end up ruining our credibility.

It's not that we can't hang around non-Christians.

But we better not let their ways become our ways.

:16 while he lingered,

Lot is dragging his feet.

I'm not sure he wants to leave Sodom.

The angels have to drag him out of the city.

:16 the LORD being merciful unto him:

Sometimes we get angry because God ruins our plans.

But it could be that God is just being merciful, and removing us from the judgment we might have fallen under if we'd been a part of it.

:17 look not behind thee,

God wants Lot and his family to clearly cut themselves off from worldly, wicked Sodom.

Looking back carries the idea of longingly wishing you were there.

Lesson:

Cut off the world and don't look back.

If you catch yourself wishing for the "good old days" in the world, you're headed for trouble.

It's like Israel in the wilderness, longing for the bondage of Egypt, so they could eat their leeks and onions.

PEEEYOOO!

:18 not so, my Lord:

A contradiction of terms.

If He's your Lord, you don't say "no" to Him.

:22 Zoar

Zoar = "little"

:26 But his wife looked back

She couldn't let go of the worldly life.

Lesson:

Others may be influenced by your compromise.

I see this as another of the consequences to Lot's compromised lifestyle in the world.

:27 Abraham gat up early in the morning

Abraham gets up to see what's been going on, and sees the smoke rising in the distance.

:29 God remembered Abraham,

It was because of Abraham's prayer, his "bartering" for Lot, that God pulled Lot out of the city before the destruction.

Lesson:

Don't stop praying!

Your prayers are powerful before the Lord.

:36 both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

Another consequence to Lot's compromise.

Look at the morals of his daughters.

:37 Moab:

Moab = from (her [the mother's]) father;

:38 Benammi

Benammi = son of my people;

Genesis 20

:1 Abraham journeyed from thence

I wonder if Abraham kind of wanted to get away from the whole Sodom place.

:2 She is my sister:

Oh no, not again ...

Keep in mind, this foxy lady is close to ninety years old.

:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream

God steps in to straighten things out.

It's kind of important, since Sarah is going to be getting pregnant soon.

God doesn't want Sarah to get pregnant by anybody other than Abraham.

:6 Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me:

I think that there are times when we almost blow it, and didn't realize what we were doing, that God steps in and helps us out.

:16 behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes,

Ryrie: he (better, it) is to thee a covering of the eyes. I.e., a vindication. Abimelech's large gift of a thousand pieces (shekels) of silver (20 shekels was the price of a slave; see 37:28), proof of his high esteem for Abraham and Sarah, would serve to stop any scoffing on the part of her household.

He's saying with his large gift, that he didn't do anything.

:17 Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech,

God had brought a judgment on Abimelech by stopping all the women from getting pregnant.

And so part of the restoration process is for Abraham to pray for healing.

Lesson:

Bring restoration.

I think that when we've sinned against people, we need to be a part of seeing them restored before the Lord.

I think that involves asking for forgiveness.

I think that involves being willing to pay for any damages we've caused.

I think that involves praying for them.

I think it involves humility on our part.
